Abstract:Rivers/brooks are the most closely bonds between nature and human activities in the estuarine delta areas. Human activities have increasingly significant impacts on rivers/brooks in the period of rapid industrialization and urbanization, at the same time human activities are deeply influenced by the environment changes. In this study, the Wuyanqiao Brook of Guangzhou City was chosen as a typical case, which is located in the core area of the Pearl River Delta, and has experienced a very rapid urbanization during the past 3 decades. Through the methods of field surveying, deep interview, analysis of statistical data and historical documents, we analyzed the evolution and dynamics of the environmental change of rivers/brooks in the Pearl River Delta under rapid urbanization. We also clarify the evolution of the relationship between human society and rivers/brooks. The research findings indicate that:(1) There is a intensive change on landscape patterns, topography and water environment of the rivers/brooks in the studied area.(2)The main driving forces of the environmental evolution are the changing human activities in the aspects of societal production and personal lifestyle.(3)The relationship between human society and rivers/brooks experienced 3 stages: the close and harmony phase(before 1987), oppose and segregation phase(1987-2003), reshaping and improving phase(after 2003).
